Whitney Houston and Dana Bash

Whitney Elizabeth Houston was conceived into a musical family, 9 August 1993 in Newark New Jersey. Whitney is the daughter and cousin to the singing sensation Dionne. As a child she was a singer in the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark. When she reached the age of 15years old, Houston was singing professionally with backing vocals alongside her mother on Chaka Khan's song from 1978 Im Every Woman. Then she went on to sing backing vocals with Lou Rawls and Jermaine and even her mother. Her work as the vocalist featured in New York funk group Material caught the eye of big record companies, like Arista and Arista, which she signed in 1982 and stayed the rest of her life with them. Her debut album Whitney Houston was released in 1985 and became the biggest-selling album by the debut artist. The album had several smash singles, including Saving All My Love for You How Will You Know That You're Good to Love and The Greatest Love of All. This led to her achieving seven US number one hits in a row. It was even better than the Beatles. The album was sold to three million people in during its initial year, and over 25 million worldwide. The album won her first six Grammy Awards. Its Whitney 1987 record, which included Where Do Broken Hearts and I Wanna Dance With Somebody as hits, helped build upon the success she had achieved. However, the 1992 movie The Bodyguard sealed her spot in the top 20 most-sellers ever. While the movie itself and her performance in it were not highly appreciated, the album's soundtrack and her cover of the Dolly Parton song I Will Always Love You topped the charts of albums and singles for months, and was sold at 44 million copies around the globe. The same year that she gave birth to her daughter Bobbi, Brown married Bobby Brown of the ex-New Edition group. The beginning of her addiction to drugs came at this point and in 1996, she'd been a frequent user.
